Who Were The Nephilim?

Contrary to popular belief, the Nephilim were not giants. Neither were they the product of sexual relations between angels and women. I will prove this.

Within Christianity, many assumptions are made about a great many things and oftentimes the masses do not question, challenge, or investigate those assumptions; they are simply accepted as truth.

Let’s set a foundation by first defining the word, Nephilim.

Nephilim is a transliteration of the Hebrew word neph-lim which means “Those who cause others to fall down.”

Where Do We Read About The Nephilim In The Bible?

We read about the Nephilim in the Bible once in Genesis Chapter 6:4 and twice in Numbers 13:33. There are only three occurrences of Nephilim in the entirety of the Bible.

Who Created the Nephilim?

Actually, Genesis Chapter 6 tells us who created the Nephilim; yet, many will not accept what I am about to show you with regards to who their Creator was.

Firstly, the Nephilim were not the product of sexual relations between angels and women. Why? Because angels are not flesh and blood beings; they are invisible and angels do not marry. (Matthew 22:30)

We are told in Genesis 6:2 that …

the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.

In Matthew 22:30 Jesus teaches us …

At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

So, the sons of God are not angels. So, what are they?

In the Bible, the expression sons of God can refer to both angels and humans. For example, in Job 38:7 …

while the morning stars sang together and all the angels [a] shouted for joy?[a] the sons of God

In Job 1:6 we read about them …

One day the angels [a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.[a] the sons of God

So, we hear that angels are sons of God in that they were fathered or created by God.

Humans are also sons of God.

The first man, Adam, did not have a human parent. His father and creator was God Himself! The woman, Eve, was not created directly by God from the dust of the ground, but she came out of the man.

In Psalms 82:6, we read with regards to humans being sons of God …

I said, ‘You are “gods” you are all sons of the Most High.Note: Jesus quotes this in John 10:34

Since angels do not marry; are invisible; not flesh and blood; and do not reproduce, the sons of God referred to in Genesis 6:2 must be humans. What type of humans?

The expression Nephilim is more of a mindset than a thing. A verb is more than a noun.

That the Nephilim were human, they were created by God. These were disobedient humans who were brutes. They were simply bad and decrepit men.

They had no respect for their Creator God, godly men, or women. They took what they wanted by brute force.

The offspring of the group/tribe of the Nephilim were not giants. We do not read anywhere in the Genesis account that this was so.

We simply read that there were giants on the earth in those days and afterward but we do not read that these giants were the result of sexual relations with the human Nephilim.

What Were The Nephilim Doing By Marrying Women They Chose?

The offspring of human Nephilim (brutes) and human women were more brutes. How so? If the offspring of a Nephilim/Woman were human sons, those sons would be raised to be disobedient bullies and brutes like their fathers. The same would hold true if the result was a daughter. This disobedient and brutal mindset would spread throughout the earth like wildfire. Apparently, this is what happened long ago.

That is why we read in Genesis 6:5 …

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time

The earth’s population way back then would not have been as it is now as the language of the human family had not been confused yet and the human family scattered. (That would come much later)

We read in Genesis 6:6, that God created men and men became Nephilim; disobedient brutes. Thus, God regretted that He created human beings who would turn out in this manner in such large numbers. In Genesis 6:6 we read …

The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled

Who Were The Nephilim?

They were disobedient human beings. They became human brutes worse than wild animals.

Are The Nephilim Still With Us Today?

Yes! The disrespectful and brutal mindset is within many human the family today. War, murder, hate, crime, disrespect, and lack of love, are qualities among many within the human family.

The Nephilim would have fit the description given by the Apostle Paul in 2 Tim 3:1-5 where he wrote …

People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power …

Much of the world today is Nephilim.

R. Jerome Harris

No one of importance. A disciple (student) of Christ apart from the established religious systems who reasons, thinks and concludes matters for myself. Something is not right with the state of religion in the world. The real dichotomy is that we live in a world so full of religion, yet is an evil, immoral, and dangerous place to live. A mental and spiritual separation from this world that Jesus said his kingdom is no part of is the first step to a "break-through" to freedom and entry into a much larger spiritual world where God and Christ resides and the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of God can be accessed.
